Cultivation time and methods of ginger

Ginger, a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the ginger family and the ginger genus, is known for its thick, juicy, and flattened rhizomes that emit a unique aroma and spicy taste. It is an indispensable seasoning in people's daily lives when cooking. Let's learn together about the cultivation time and methods of ginger.

1, Cultivation time of ginger

Ginger usually prefers a warm climate, and its growth and tuber formation require higher temperatures. The temperature for germination should be above 16-18 ℃, and 20-27 ℃ is the optimal temperature range for ginger growth. When the average temperature of the month reaches 24-29 ℃, the growth of roots and stems is most vigorous. If the temperature is below 15 ℃, the growth of ginger will be inhibited, and below 10 ℃, there is even a risk of tuber rot.

Therefore, the planting time of ginger should be determined according to local temperature conditions, and the suitable planting time may vary in different regions. Usually, ginger is sown later. For example, in Guizhou, it is suitable to sow in early to mid March in warm areas, after mid April in mild areas, and in early May in cool areas. If plastic film covering technology is used, the sowing time can be correspondingly advanced.

2, Cultivation methods of ginger

1. Land selection

Ginger has a shallow root system and limited distribution range, so it requires fertile soil that is deep and rich in organic matter. Fertile and loose loam or sandy loam soil, as well as soil rich in humus, should be selected to avoid using sticky and damp low-lying or barren soil. Ginger is not suitable for continuous cropping and should be rotated with other vegetables for more than three years to prevent diseases.

2. Soil preparation and fertilization

Ginger has a long period of vigorous growth and requires deep plowing of the soil to promote weathering and loosening, which is beneficial for root development. Ginger requires a large amount of fertilizer, with approximately 2500 kilograms of decomposed farmyard manure, 50-100 kilograms of fermented cake fertilizer, and 50-100 kilograms of phosphorus fertilizer applied per acre.

3.Cultivation methods

The cultivation methods of ginger include high box cultivation and ridge cultivation. When sowing, place the buds facing upwards and cover with 5-6 centimeters of soil. High box cultivation is suitable for areas with high groundwater levels, while ridge cultivation is suitable for terraced fields or slopes with low groundwater levels and good ventilation.

4. Ginger seed processing

Choose ginger chunks that are flat in shape, have good color, have short and large internodes, and are free from pests and diseases as seeds, with a planting amount of about 150-250 kilograms per acre. Soak ginger seeds in a solution of plant ash or Bordeaux mixture for disinfection.

Sun dry for 2-3 days until the ginger skin becomes dry and white. Sprouting in a warm environment, maintaining appropriate humidity and temperature until the young shoots grow to about 1 centimeter.

3, Manage Ginger

1. Shade: Ginger prefers shade, so a sunshade should be built after sowing. In autumn, when the underground part expands, the sunshade can be removed.

2. Water and fertilizer management: Apply fertilizer 2-4 times according to plant growth, combined with tillage and weeding. Apply less in the early stage and more in the middle and later stages.

3. Tillage and weed control: Ginger prefers loose soil and requires regular tillage and weed control, with deep tillage in the early stage and shallow tillage in the middle and late stages.

4. Soil cultivation: Ginger has a habit of growing upwards and needs to be cultivated multiple times to thicken the soil layer and prevent ginger chunks from being exposed.

5. Prevention and control of pests and diseases: Mainly to prevent and control ginger blight, implement crop rotation, seed block disinfection, field drainage, and timely removal of diseased plants.

6. Harvesting: Ginger harvesting is divided into three types: tender ginger, aged ginger, and planted ginger, and harvested at different times as needed.

The above are the cultivation time and methods of ginger. You can choose the suitable sowing time according to the local environment, and later management is also crucial for achieving high yield.
