Temperature
Gala apples prefer cool, dry temperate climates, requiring neither severe winter cold nor extreme summer heat, with small annual temperature fluctuations and large daily temperature ranges. Their ideal temperature range is an annual average temperature of 9-14°C, with extreme winter lows no lower than -12°C and summer highs no higher than 20°C. The annual accumulated temperature of temperatures ≥10°C is approximately 5000°C. The growing season (April-October) averages 12-18°C, requiring 1200-1500 hours of cold temperatures below 7.2°C in winter to successfully transition through natural dormancy.
Water
Although Gala apples prefer a relatively dry environment, they still require adequate water and appropriate humidity during their growing season for normal growth and development. However, excessive water and humidity can lead to dense foliage, increased pest infestation, poor fruit color, low sugar content, and astringency. An ideal annual rainfall of 500-1000 mm and humidity of 60%-70% are generally recommended.
Light
Gala apples are light-loving fruit trees. According to measurements, the light compensation point is 600-940 lux, and the saturation point is 24,000-75,000 lux. Insufficient light directly reduces photosynthesis and the tree's nutritional level, affecting fruit coloring and sugar conversion. Excessive and prolonged exposure to strong direct sunlight can easily cause burns to branches and fruit. Generally, an annual sunshine duration of approximately 2,000 hours is required.
Soil
Gala apples are best grown in sunny, open, sheltered areas with good vegetation, good sunlight, and convenient drainage and irrigation on gently sloping land. Gala apples are not very particular about soil; clay, sandy, or loam soils are all suitable, but deep, loose, fertile, and organically rich sandy loam soils are preferred. The ideal pH range is 5.3-8.2, with an optimal pH of 5.4-6.8; soil pH below 5.4 is recommended.
