How To Store Ginger Without Drying Out And Rotting

Aug 20, 2025

1. Direct Refrigeration: Wash and dry fresh, intact ginger, wrap it in a plastic bag or plastic wrap, and store it in the refrigerator at 4-8°C. This method will preserve the ginger's freshness, but be careful to keep the surface dry to prevent excess moisture from spoiling.

2. Plastic Bag Storage: Wash and dry the ginger, wrap it in a paper towel, place it in a plastic bag, squeeze out any air, and tie the bag tightly. Store in the refrigerator at 2°C-5°C. Check regularly. If any condensation forms, wipe it dry before storing it back in the refrigerator to prevent rapid dehydration and rotting.

3. Salt Water Soaking: Wash the ginger and dry the surface. Boil an appropriate amount of salt water in a pot. Once cooled, add the ginger, ensuring it is completely submerged. This method inhibits bacterial growth. Storing it in a cool, dark place will keep the ginger fresh and tender, preventing it from drying out and rotting.

4. Alcohol Wipe Method: Use a cotton ball dipped in alcohol to wipe the surface of the ginger, allowing the alcohol to evaporate naturally. The alcohol will sterilize and disinfect the ginger. Then wrap the ginger in plastic wrap and store it in a cool, dry place to reduce bacterial growth and extend its shelf life.

5. Cellar Storage Method: If possible, store the ginger in a cellar. First, lay a layer of dry straw on the cellar floor, then stack the ginger on top. Be careful not to overcrowd the cellar and leave enough space for ventilation. The relatively stable temperature and humidity in a cellar will help the ginger preserve its quality for a longer period of time.
